Vermont is the last state that has a fish SHOOTING season, that is with firearms, today is the last day and while I carried my flintlock my friend carried
his bow, bowfishing is open all year in Vermont for a half dozen species, but I wasn't going to miss the last day of fish shooting....the real reason I was
there was the report of snipe in the marshes, see other post on that snafu, and we did not shoot or quill any fish, a bit windy today but beats being on the
couch.
There were thousands of big bluegills and sunnies and bass in the shallows still on beds, I am so happy I put my 1 wt back on the rack or I'd be there
still.

Northernborn I used to have a springer spaniel that would dive under the water and swim under the water if it was deep enough. He would also retrieve fish ( a
pain if you trying to throw it back cause its too small!) and small rocks off the river bottom. I believe he would have made a very good fish shooters
companion!

Keith I had a tri colored retriever used to do the same thing...on a wounded diving duck she was better than a trained otter.

The idea is to kill or stun with concussion, most using a 35 or 30 caliber rifle or a shotgun with slugs, I prefer flintlock rifles and smoothbores, a 50, 54
and a 62 work well.
The trick is to get enough down angle to see the fish well and also to minimize ricochet from the water, short shots are the rule, 50 feet and under. Many use treestands in marsh trees but we prefer to use our boats, some have permanent raised platforms in them for bowfishing that work well for shooting. I find pike to be too much of a sporting fish to short change them by shooting, but gar, carp, drum, bowfin ( lawyer or grinnell), suckers, etc are fair game. Vermont has many traditions, most of which if not all, are under attack by outsiders moving in and fixing the Vermonters who have been doing it wrong for the last 400 years, the story is repeated almost world wide as far as I can see===people love an area, move there and proceed to turn it into the very place they escaped from. LOL> at any rate, the fish shooting is a time honored tradition in the vermont marshes, with size limits and all that, it is a heckuva time and I look forward already to next spring, the shooting seasons runs the end of March until end of May sometime, typically the 25th to 25th, respectively. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000103&sid=aR1_DMQNUNBM&refer=us |

That is crazy. If I ever win the lottery, or maybe when I retire I will travel around the country with a cabover camper on my truck. And I will sample every
crazy off the wall, crazy, or unusual type of fishing or hunting there is out there. Fishing I could snag paddlefish one week, Noodle Flatheads another, and
Shoot Pike when I hit Vermont.
