That's a Bigg'n.
My friend Mike S. says he keeps seeing one that size on the trail into his camp. I think maybe he wants to keep other folks away from his hunt'n spot. I think when I run across a big critter like that while I'm hunt'n, there may be a casualty. Then I'll change my britches. FLJohnny |

That picture has been around for quite a while. A decent snake, and probably six feet. I imagine 9.7 pounds is closer to the actual weight. They don't get
more than 4' long in my yard before my wife makes me kill them. Which reminds me, I still have a skin frozen in water that needs to be tanned.

What did you do with the meat Skip? I've forgotten, the little grey cells are not what they used to be.

I thought that was something that might be served with fruit bats.
Is it snipe season yet?!? |

I say no thank you to snakes. That is a very pretty skin Skip. I wish my older brother hadn't chased me with snakes when I was a young girl. Put the fear
of God in me and it hasn't left yet. Seeing a snake or being surprised by one beckons a "girl scream" as my toes tuck and curl.

nice skin skip, i agree that snake is closer to 7 or 8 pounds hard to tell, but the largest rattler I've EVER seen was in sundance, WY and it was barely 12
pounds..still a MONSTER, and nearly 5 and a half feet long, but nowhere near 97. lol.

I wanted those who knew to comment on the weight! I can not imagine anyone holding out a 97 lb snake like that. Pretty funny what you can find on the internet.

Saw the snake. BIG!! But, it was also reported as being found in (a) Bulloch County, Ga.; South Carolina, Alabama, and somewhere in South Ga. I think it is
one of those urban legends. However, it is BIG, and I wouldn't want to run into it ANYWHERE!!!

Skip, I just noticed that you don't have the head end clamped down at all, how long did you let the snake be after beheading it when you skinned and
cleaned it?
i've always found that the as I skin it the snake thrashes around and will generally irritate me thrashing while I skin and gut it, long after the head is off and in the fire. How long do you wait to get a still snake like that? I don't let them sit around in the warm weather long, but I'd risk it to ahve a stiller snake! thanks, will be hunting them starting next week. |

Bob, that snake was "aged" in the fridge for two days before surgery. I have skinned some that have only been dead a couple of hours and it is tough
to get some of them to be still. I remember cleaning one specifically that I shot when my dear, kind, loving wife (who watches this forum like a hawk) was
hunting with me. It was 27-28 hours after he had been decapitated and he still had enough nerve response to try and crawl away. The snake in the above pictures
never moved a muscle.

Good enough...I will try it...sure, I can stick a few dead rattlers in the fridge, she won't care...uh huh..
I toss the heads in the fire, I've seen, and I bet you have too, plenty of bite reflex in a rattler long LONG after the head is off the body...a mexican cook told me that if you hang the snake up and let it hang after cutting off the head in about an hour it loses muscle response fast and will be a good still snake to skin, I will try that. ain't no way I sticking a big headless rattler in the Dear Wife's fridge...thanks Skip! |

northernborn wrote: Bob, I hear ya. If we only had one I wouldn't be doing it either. Fortunately we have one in the garage. We keep a case of cold water and some bulk food in it but it also serves very well for other things. Every time you open it a few feathers are stirred up. Some are stuck to the shelves by dry blood so they stay in there until I clean it out, which never happens. When we get our new one I will probably get the one that is currently in the house. My wife won't be able to complain if she knows she's opening it at her own risk. |
