Tried the bass today |

Last Saturday I stayed in bed all day so today I decided I would get up and go fishing. I was out of the house at the crack of nine and on my way to the now
flooded snipery. I haven't done as well on bass this year but I have only fished for them a couple of times. The water has warmed up some since the last
time I fished for them and I was hoping that would make the fishing better. I caught a dozen which is the best I have done at that lake this year. The weather
went from cloudy and calm to mostly sunny and breezy. The fishing was about the same regardless. The worst conditions would be sunny and calm and that is when
the fishing gets tough.

Greetings,
Nice Bass Skip. Looks like great Pickerel water as well. Being a son of the Okefenokee I love " jackfish " and " green Trout " as well. I've promised myself a winter trip to the Tallahassee area to sample the Pickerel spawn for a long time... seeing your photos of the area waters, I think I'll keep that promise this year. jm |

SS, I could have legally kept five bass but I didn't. Maybe I should keep something. I've eaten enough catfish lately and I'm ready for something
different.
Keith, that big mouth makes them do some strange things. Sometimes when fishing with a bait that imitates a large minnow you will catch a fish no longer than your bait. JM, how is the pickerel fishing over there? Most people I know would rather not catch them. I like them as long as they don't cut my line. Our lakes all have chain pickerel and the small creeks have redfins. When I was younger I fished a couple of small creeks that only had water when we got a fair amount of rain. Those places were slap full of small redfins.

I have eaten chain pickerel but it has been years. The flesh is quite good. The bones are why many people won't keep them. The redfin pickerel I have
caught were too small. I bet most of them were not much bigger around than a hotdog.

They look like what we call Pike Skip. They get up to 30 or 40 lb plus in Irish waters.

Keith, it is similar to a pike. We don't have them this far south and I imagine it is because they can't survive in water as hot as it gets here. Our
state record pickerel is a hair under seven pounds. That makes the one I am holding up a whopper. By comparison, the record pike in North America is 55 pounds.

Skip, At one time we had a wonderful jackfish population in the St. Johns with some very healthy fish in regards size. Pollution and storm damage to the grass
beds has really hurt. Some say the grass is returning... I hope so. Weed control spraying in local lakes has also hurt. Rodman Reservoir holds quality fish
as do some lakes in the Ocala area.
Over the years I've herd of some rather large fish coming out of Lake Seminole. Do you fish there enough to have an opinion? Truth is, the all class record was set in the county of my birth and I would love to break it as a mater of family pride. :) jm |

JM, I have fished Seminole exactly one time. It was in February of 2005 and I was fishing a B.A.S.S. federation club tournament. I was a "non-boater"
which meant I was fishing out of the back of another member's boat. Guess who won the stupid tournament?
What are the tippet class records like for chain pickerel? I know I can't catch a huge jack here but fish up to three to maybe four pounds can be caught. I don't target them intentionally but I have noticed a couple of things. They don't seem to be as sensitive as bass are to fronts when the water is cool early in the year and they don't seem as active when the water gets warm. Up through April there have been many days when I caught as many or more jacks than bass but as we get into the hot months the bass caught probably outnumber the jacks 10:1. |

Skip, considering Talquin gave up the current Florida record fish I would think you fine gentalmen of Tallahassee have a very good shot at very large Pickerel.
As I understand it a eight pounder came from Talquin although that fish carries an * in the state records, it is recognized by FWC as the un-certifieed state
record. Have you spent much time on Talquin? Every time I travel past the area I'm tempted to sneak a peek, but never do.
Pickerel spawn in the late winter months and can be quite active at that time. Have had some good times in the past shooting ducks at first light and fishing good ol' Mepps spinners for "jackfish" after shooting ended. jm |

Skip, that "body bow and shake" is the Gallinule equivelant of | #13 | ||
|
the broken wing display of birds like Killdeer.....performed to be flashing and showy and to draw your attention away from the nest or recently hatched
young....little ones were probably very near by if the bird did that repeatedly....looks like it worked...

I figure it either had to that or the bird had tourette syndrome.
