Hunting season just around the corner |
Lead | ||

Okay, maybe it's not that close but anyone in my state that is a glutton for punishment rail season opens in less than three months. If slogging through
mud and hot water when it is better than ninety degrees isn't your thing there is always the option of moorhen hunting from a boat. I will be walking for
soras a few times because that is how I get in shape for snipe season. At the end of September we will have our five day early wood duck and teal season. Just
over three weeks from now the 2009 federal duck stamp will be for sale. This year will feature a pair of old squaws.

I still need to check the local WMA's here around JAX to see how much snipe ground is available and the season dates for each. I know some of the WMA's
will demand a quota permit and the application date opened June 1st. I better get my priorities in order and secure my hunting grounds before they are gone.

I love the glass is half full attitude. The last three months are always the hardest. Between the anticipation of football season, hunting season and the
rising temperatures, summer is getting tougher by the day. I need to go fishing!

The wait is certainly wearing me out. I am in a great state of confusion as to what and where I want to hunt first. Family will be in Colorado fishing in
August. If I go, I could take the dog, take the long way home and drop into New Mexico for the early experimental Grouse season near Santa Fe. Then too, the
area in Colorado north of Steamboat Springs that I hunted at the end of my big road trip last year has been calling to me all year to go back. So I could go
back in September for a week long trip to chase Sage Grouse and mountain Snipe. Then from what I am seeing here in Texas is that the local Dove population is
about as good as it has been in years so I could stay home and spend several days hunting those in Sept. as well as Oklahoma early resident Goose prospects I
missed hunting last year due to my Colorado trip. Then today the Feds approved a 16 day Texas Teal season in September that would be fun to take advantage of
if I stay near home.
Oh what to do? |

I have already decided that I am going to hunt rails this year. I don't mean walking around in 90 plus degree heat trying to pick up a sora or two
(although I will do that also as part of my snipe scouting), I'm talking about a trip to the coast somewhere for some clapper shooting.
On a different note, I missed first day of issue again for the duck stamp but I remembered to buy it today. Anyone else have one yet? When I looked at my account history with the postal service I see that I was one day later this year than last year buying it. I get my duck stamps online, that way I can get the kind that has to be moistened to stick. I don't like the self-adhesive ones because after the season is over I like to put my stamp in my "Game Register and Waterfowl" book. I neither sign nor affix my stamps to my license even though it looks I do both when it is on my license. Long-tailed duck, huh? Looks like an old squaw to me.

Last week when I was mailing the check for the hats, as well as some other things, I almost asked if the duck stamps were in, but for some reason I didn't,
thinking it was too early.

I never did receive mine from last season. Feel I was cheated by the license branch.

I am fairly new to hunting Massachusetts and was surprised to find they open their crow season July 1st, so I have some good wingshooting ahead, it's a 3
day a week option, Fri, Sat and Mon I was tied up today so that didn't happen giving me time to load some rounds for friday.
PatF..I see you mention football season? I would guess a load of 4's? you must need a fair amount of penetration, no? |

I'm very close to Mass, Joe, I am in Vermont a goodly part of the year, from the house I can see Mt greylock in Mass to the south, I am in Glastenbury/
Bennington Vermont for the next 3 weeks, I hunt the northern Berkshires and from Gloucester to Essex, my wife is from North Adams, her family from Rockport.
I can be in Mass in 20 minutes, NY in 10. Join me for crow sometime and take a look at all the snipe we don't have! LOL. I picked up my Federal stamp but the State stamps are not out yet says the town clerk. |
