Both titles that Skip described are true to the bird. They are not the most wary creature and many are shot on the ground or from trees. I have heard but never seen that if they are in a tree you can shoot them starting from the bottom and working your way up and kill them all.

My experience is in the woods, the thicket as some call it. The ruffed grouse like the heavy cover and can fly through it with ease. The challenge is finding the birds and a good dog is a valuable tool. Sometimes the cover is so thick you never see the bird flush but you hear the thunder of it's wings. All kinds of interesting things happen when you try to shoot, like your gun hitting a tree stopping it's swing, shooting a tree that is very close, in fact so close that the bark hits you face. THen there is the case of the bird flushing totally opposite of where you think it will and your feet twisting as you tip off balance trying to get the shot off.

They are truly a fun bird to chase with a meat that is very mild and lean. The flesh is similar in color to the meat found on a chicken thigh.

If you can shoot snipe you have the skill to hit grouse, just imagine doing it in the thickest cover you have ever tried to navigate. If you are hunting in area that is easy to walk your chances of success will be very unlikely.
