Take the camera with you Tiago. When the hunting season is over no-one wishes the snipe do well as much as us guys!
How do you find them, pointing dogs, walk and look or watching for the mother bird? Well done anyway! Irish Snipe

I'll to put some pictures here, give me a couple of days. I look for the chick by walking and flushing the adult. Usually you find one adult with 2 chicks, because the snipe couple divide the clutch when hatching (2 for the male and 2 for de female) and the couple "brothers" never see each again. The behaviour of the adults is very important when looking for the chick, as well as some signs and track in the soil. I don't use the pointing dog because it's dangerouse for the chicks (at least the dog I work with...) Cheers Tiago |

Trataruga,
Great to hear from you! Do all the snipe species divide their brood this way? I guess this is what the saying "Don't put all your eggs (in this case chicks) in one basket" means. Where are you doing your observations? Thank you very much for updating us. As Irish Snipe said, everyone here wishes the snipe well. Great work. SS |

Hi again,
The observations are being done at the Azores. Today I found another chick, probably from the same clutch, but from the male's part of the brood. And... I found my first snipe nest (ever), I don't know how much will take to hatch but I'll monitor it, it has 4 eggs. About other snipe species behaviour I don't know. Snipes are difficult to study, most of the works are on Common snipe and Great Snipe. As I work only with Common snipe I know this better, but I can check about other species, do you want to know about any in particular? Cheers Tiago |

Trataruga,
It would be nice to see some photos of the Great Snipe! The snipe we get here are the Pintail, Swinhoe's and Common. Last season, the only snipe I identified was the Pintail. To my regret, I was not able to personally identify the other two...actually, I forgot to look at all the snipe in the stringer. Next season I will do so. I would really appreciate the data on the Pintail and Swinhoe's. Thanks so much. SS |

Now that is a photo I really would like to have a copy of. Good job, Tiago ... and by the way, you are doing this for a living? ... or for a degree?

Tiago,
Thanks for that bit of info on the Pintail. That is a great photo! Thank you very much for sharing it with us. I hope it grows strong....and bypass a certain area in Florida when it migrates. The weather is so much better here during September and October... SS |

I do this for living ;) and at the same time I'm doing my Mac course.
Well SS, the snipe that breeds in Azores probably don't migrate, and if so... they are more similar to the Common snipe than to the Wilson's snipe, so they would probably migrate to Europe but, who knows? Has I said a few months ago pay attention to your bags in the US, because in Europe some Wilson's snipes where already shot, maybe the same can happen with Common snipe in America. Tiago |

I don't know...I don't go up there (I say up because the breeding ground is really up there from the place where I live) since almost 3 weeks!
I hope the chicks are OK, it's very difficult to find the same individuals again. Last hunting season I had one ring recover which was great to understand their movements here on the islands. It's not enough, but we have to start some where! Two weeks ago I've on the Portuguese mainland breeding ground, and I saw my first snipes there for this breeding season. Unfortunately I didn't found any chicks there. Tiago |
