Scott, I watched a good swedish video of Capercaille shooting. It didn't seem as difficult as the description of your ruffed grouse hunt, but I would still
want to try it. With the Capercaille hunting, they need a treeing spitz (finnish spitz usually), to find the bird then bay it, distracting the bird while they
stalk up close enough to shoot it with their sighted shotguns. The birds seemed very wary. The challenge is not the shooting skill, but the stalking skill and
the ability of the dog.
We used to have them here in Ireland. I wonder if it would be possible to re-introduce them as gamebirds? I know of a really nice Scots Pine wood as well. We have plenty of comercial pine forestry as well. I would think they'd thrive here.
