Mississippi Kite |

I got my camera back from being repaired yesterday so a little while ago I went outside looking for something to shoot. A kite flew into a tree across the
street so I snapped a couple of pictures of it. The first one is at almost 10x zoom and the other two are at a full 10x. When he flew he came straight over my
head, flew down my driveway, and into my garage. After bumping into the wall he came back out and flew across the street to another tree farther away.

Nice pics. What was wrong with your camera? Which one was it?
We took your advice and now have a Canon SX110 IS and have so far been very pleased. Is it snipe season yet?!? |

That is a beautiful bird. Built for speed! Glad he didn't get hurt.

Scott, it was the SX110. A couple of weeks ago it stopped functioning properly. One day it was fine, the next it wasn't. With either full zoom or close
shots on the macro setting it was in focus or close to being in focus but everything else was out of focus. Not to the point of being blurry and the subject
indistinguishable but to the point that the camera clearly wasn't focusing on anything.
I called their technical support department on the 1st of this month to see if someone could help me over the phone. I was hoping I had accidentally done something with a setting. While I talked to the guy on the phone I walked around inside and outside taking pictures. Then I would display them on the computer and tell him if anything improved. It didn't. He told me it would be best to send it in. I explained that on the 20th I am going south for vacation and I must have a camera. I asked what the odds were that I'd have it back by then. He said two weeks is an average turnaround but there's no way of knowing exactly how long it will take. I realize that and appreciated him not trying to make a promise the service department couldn't keep. On the 2nd I shipped the camera to Illinois via USPS priority mail. With the 4th being a holiday they couldn't have possibly received it until the 6th. It took them two days to get it back in the mail and FedEx dropped it off yesterday afternoon. The details they sent back with it said the optical assembly was inoperative and it was replaced. it also stated that "Other electrical adjustments, inspection and cleaning and parts replacements were carried out". The camera had taken under three thousand pictures since I got it on January 2 of this year. My total out of pocket cost was $4.95 for priority shipping back to Canon. Considering where customer service has gone for the most part it would be impossible for me to be happier with the way this played out. My next camera, I mean Janet's next camera, will also be a Canon. |

Nice picture Skip,
It looks like to me that you have a nest nearby... Tiago |

Tiago, considering the time of year that is likely the case. We have a large number of dragonflies around our yard and that is one of the staples of their
diet. I imagine that is what that bird was trying to get as it swooped down and flew into the garage. I'm sure you know they are a migratory bird but I am
within the small range where they are resident birds. More often than not I see two or more birds together regardless of the time of year.

I thought the bird was flying directly to the camera, trying to protect the nest site. You are very lucky in having a "restaurant" for them in
your garden, I hope you'll bring us more National Geographic style pictures.
